Photos from the field the stunning crystals revealing deep secrets about Australian volcanoes

The two active volcanoes in Australia are in the Australian Antarctic Territory, on Heard Island and the McDonald Islands, 4000km away from Perth to the south-west. Heard Island - Big Ben. The Heard Island volcano is nicknamed Big Ben. It's around 25km across, and Mawson Peak, its highest point, towers 2745m above sea level.. Even today a new eruption is not impossible. Like the mountains, the volcanoes are all on the eastern side of Australia, in a series of chains running north to south, starting 500 km of the northeastern coast (the Maer islands) to Tasmania in the south. The total length is 4400 km. That is a sizable sequence!
